The Skill Every Fashion Designer Must Learn

Without a doubt, learning how to draw flats is the #1 most important skill fashion designers must learn. Flats are a culmination of all your knowledge about design, proportion, fabric, and construction poured into a technical illustration. These flats templates and this video were created to help you practice drawing flats, whether you draw them by hand or on the computer using Adobe Illustrator or similar software.

Zoe Hong thank you so much Zoe! I am definitely gonna buy these later this week. I would be so thankful if you could please post male templates! Please, please do so. Drawings flats is something I have so much trouble doing still. And since I mainly design men’s clothing, your templates would help me immensely. As always great video! Your channel is always so informative and in-depth in it’s lessons.

The body shapes are entirely different and require different shaping seams. Men’s bodies don’t require bust darts, for example.

You just reminded me of all my homework I have to do today for my flats class. 4 in class based on two real garments and then 6 from photos and then all transferred to bond paper and 4 are inked. Plus a 10 picture vocab packet. Yay me

Also, could you do a video explaining the difference between a stylized fashion flat and a manufacturing flat?

    • Zoe Hong

      November 8, 2017 at 5:14 pm

There are 2 kinds of flats: a quick, rough design flat just to get the idea down on paper and a fully detailed out, properly proportioned manufacturing flat. Flats are technical, fashion figure illustrations are expressive and stylized.

Omg this is Genius! I’m so buying it (I’m the one who bought your entire Etsy shop lol). Btw in my beginnings I was doing front darts that ended at the bust apex. I learned it was wrong… the hard way 😂😂

8.5×11 and A4 are basically interchangeable

Hi, Zoe! Stupid question. I bought your female fashion illustration templates yesterday. When I go to print, what should I change the settings to? I printed them out and they came out really small.

    • Zoe Hong

      November 8, 2017 at 6:12 pm

They should be formatted for 8.5×11″ at 300dpi but all the images are set narrow enough to print on A4 without changing any settings. You should be fine just printing at 100%.

‘friendly neighborhood over caffeinated fashion design and illustration professor zoe hong’

    I screamed, best description ever!

      November 9, 2017 at 5:34 am

I know, I know, it’s a little misleading, as I am not that friendly and I literally live on the other side of the world (you’re in Greece, right?)…

AHHHHHHHHH!!! I’m overwhelmed with excitement because I have been trying to figure out what flats are in depth! My sewing teacher keeps pointing me at Vogue’s flats/blocks but I’m a beautiful trans-feminine woman 🧑🏻😅 so I need to figure out how to make my own
